The Kings River flows from the Sierra Nevada and its foothills across the San Joaquin Valley through portions of Fresno, Tulare and Kings counties. Its waters are stored in Pine Flat Reservoir, a lake of one million acre-feet of storage created with the completion of Pine Flat Dam in 1954, before flowing through a number of control structures on its course toward serving a service area of one million acres and nearly 20,000 farms. The river occupies a number of forks and channels. In all, the Kings River is 252 miles long. The river's natural course was mostly into the Tulare Lake bed but its flood flows have long been directed through the North Fork system into the San Joaquin River.
